Breast Cancer Risk Question - does it hurt if you have breast cancer and you touch it

Someone I know recently told me she felt a lump in her breast and it hurts when touched. The problem is that they do not tell anyone or seen a doctor for 2 years, and I wondered what the risk of dying if you do knock on wood, to breast cancer. It seems that in the menopause and a history of thyroid problems had when I was about 20 years, but that seems to be over. Any help would be appreciated.
